Insiders expands e‑prescription solution for private health insurance with ePA Access
The smart E‑Prescription module not only enables convenient billing through individual private health insurance (PHI) apps, but now also supports policyholders in accessing the electronic patient record. Seven PHI providers are already using the solution.
Insiders is expanding its smart E‑Prescription module from the smart Mobile Toolkit with a new ePA add-on for private health insurance (PHI). This allows PHI companies to offer their policyholders not only convenient use and billing of e‑prescriptions, but also easy access to the electronic patient record (ePA).
The ePA and e‑prescription promise policyholders a connected, paperless healthcare experience. In practice, however, the hurdle is often the very first step. Unlike statutory health insurance (SHI), where the insurance card is sufficient, private health insurance policyholders must set up an authenticator app — and, depending on their insurer, additional applications — before they can use e‑prescriptions and the ePA for the first time. Many give up before experiencing any of the actual benefits.
This is precisely where Insiders steps in, moving the setup process directly into the insurance app that policyholders are already familiar with. Step-by-step wizards guide users through the required configuration, while videos and tutorials provide clear, easy-to-follow instructions. What was once a technical barrier becomes a guided onboarding experience.
E‑Prescription and EPA Integrate Seamlessly into Familiar Workflows
Once the setup is complete, the e‑prescription slots into the established billing workflow via the smart E‑Prescription module. The e‑prescription and billing receipt are securely transferred with a single tap from the respective e‑prescription application and fed into the document submission process. As with all other documents, policyholders receive feedback on the processing status and outcome of their e‑prescription.
The new ePA add-on supplements the existing module with information and features related to the electronic patient record. Policyholders receive in-app explanations on how to use the ePA and can navigate directly to the insurance-specific frontend of the electronic patient record.
This is made possible by the smart Mobile Toolkit from Insiders Technologies, which enables private health insurers to provide their policyholders with a fully branded app. Policyholders already use these apps to view contracts, submit documents, or update personal data. E‑prescriptions and the EPA now join as additional features, integrating seamlessly into this familiar environment.
Digitalization in Healthcare Requires Easy Access
Around one third of private health insurers in Germany already use the smart Mobile Toolkit to efficiently provide a customized app for their policyholders. Seven providers have the smart E‑Prescription module in active production use, enabling their policyholders to use e‑prescriptions with ease. Five of these are currently also rolling out the new ePA add-on.
Private health insurers using the smart Mobile Toolkit from Insiders Technologies include Alte Oldenburger, Concordia Versicherungen, Münchener Verein, Versicherer im Raum der Kirchen (VRK), and VGH Versicherungen, among others.
„A digital health offering only delivers its full value when policyholders can get started without any barriers,“ says Dr. Armin Stahl, Head of Sales Unit E‑Health and Mobile at Insiders. „The app has become an indispensable part of the private health insurance service offering. It gives policyholders a convenient line to their insurer, reduces costs through an electronic mailbox and a high degree of self-service, and simultaneously improves service quality. By integrating e‑prescriptions and the ePA, insurers are consistently expanding their digital services and making it significantly easier for policyholders to access modern health applications.“
