Agentic AI in a Practical Test: Jointly Developing AI Agents
At the Invoice & Agentic AI Designer Circle, user companies work with Insiders to discuss specific areas of application for autonomous AI in the purchase-to-pay (P2P) process.
Insiders, a leading technology provider of software for Intelligent Automation (IA), discussed specific applications of autonomous AI agents in the purchase-to-pay process with customers as part of its “Invoice & Agentic AI” Design Circle. The two-day event focused on the question of how new approaches to agentic AI can be meaningfully integrated into existing business processes.
Collaboration in Practice
Agentic AI is currently regarded as the next, highly promising stage of development in the use of artificial intelligence in businesses. In the future, autonomous systems are expected not only to provide support for individual tasks but also to independently carry out process steps and prepare decisions.
A brief survey conducted among participants in the “Gestalterkreis” reveals a clear picture: There is a strong desire for further automation of manual process steps. At the same time, only a few companies have so far implemented AI agents in their operational workflows. Interest in concrete and practical use cases is correspondingly high.
“I was a bit skeptical at first and wondered what these agents were actually capable of from a technical standpoint,” reports Patrick Heckenstaller, Head of Invoice Processing at MAN Truck & Bus SE. “But at the design workshop, it was really interesting to see how far the development has already come.” And Sebastian Bernard, European Sales, Optimization of Order Management Processes, Bosch Rexroth AG, comments: “Before the joint workshop and the presentations, I didn’t have enough concrete ideas. We really delved into the topic during the workshop—and came away with some completely new ideas.”
At the design workshop, Insiders presented the current state of development and the roadmap for its solutions for automated invoice processing. In the workshops that followed, participants discussed potential applications for autonomous systems throughout the entire P2P process together with product managers and AI experts potential areas of application for autonomous systems throughout the entire P2P process.
The focus was primarily on process steps that still require manual intervention today—such as in cases of exceptions, unclear documents, or more complex verification processes. A key finding from the discussions: AI agents deliver the greatest value where they meaningfully complement existing automation and reduce manual effort.
“The agent we were shown there made a very, very strong impression on me. I could see at any time: Where am I right now? Has my delivery arrived yet? Am I still short on supplies? And in the end, I was able to initiate actions—for example, automatically notifying the supplier,” reports another participant, who is responsible for managing accounts receivable and the audit process at the company.
“Agentic AI is currently a hot topic. However, what matters most is not the technology alone, but its concrete benefits for business processes,” says Jan Oevermann, Head of Sales Unit Industry at Insiders Technologies. “That’s why we don’t develop these solutions in isolation, but rather in collaboration with the companies that operate these processes on a daily basis.”
